The purpose of the qualification is to provide continuous professional development which contributes to employers’ responsibilities for the health and safety of their employees. It helps to meet legal requirements that employees are competent to perform their tasks. The qualification is listed by Skills for Care as CPD which ‘supplements employers’ existing responsibilities for specific duties in accordance with The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, (amended 2004).’ The aim is to develop learners’ knowledge and competence to carry out risk assessments to reduce risk and to carry out moving and handling tasks safely.
There are no specific entry requirements however learners should have a minimum of level one in literacy and numeracy or equivalent. The qualification is suitable for learners of 16 years of age and above.
Learners must achieve a minimum of 14 credits: 10 credits from the Mandatory units and at least 4 credits from the Optional units.

The qualification is assessed by internally set and marked assessments subject to external quality assurance. Where indicated in the unit specifications, assessment must meet the requirements of the identified assessment strategy/principles.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive an externally accredited PDF certificate from a nationally recognised and Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation.
